Malaysia is one of the most urbanised countries in East Asia, with Kuala Lumpur the capital the largest city and home of around 1.31 million people. With an entire population of around 31 million, Malaysia spreads its growing population between urban and city centres with economic and employment growth across the country in agriculture, industry and services (retail, tourism and hospitality.) Malaysia is actually split into two (2) regions, the Malaysian Borneo and Peninsula Malaysia. Both areas are geographically separate providing diversity in scenery, cultures and lifestyles. Culture abounds with its diversity in Malaysia. Explore Batu Caves and the beautiful temples and mosques in Kuala Lumpur or the six-tiered temple of the Chinese sea goddess Mazu Thean Hou. Kuala Lumpur is also home to the tallest twin towers in the world the Petronas Twin Towers. An iconic landmark.

Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding cities are a shopper’s paradise! For those looking to find good quality items at bargain prices, the Golden Triangle along the famous stretch of Bintang Walk houses a plethora of shops of unknown brand names with quality goods alongside the worlds well-known brands such as Prada, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein etc. Wander shopping malls, markets and stalls laden with goods in Malaysia and literally shop till you drop!

Food, glorious food!

Name a type of food that you want in Malaysia and you do not need to go very far to find quality, well priced deliciousness! Italian, Asian, French, Middle Eastern, Western: Malaysia has it all! The diversity of cultures in Malaysia extend to the variety of cuisine choice.

Due to the close geographical and historical proximity to Singapore and Indonesia, dishes are similar with Nasi lemak, Mee Goreng and Roti found in food stalls everywhere, making Malaysia a foodie heaven!

Multiculturism abounds!

Although the official language for Malaysia is Malay, it is quite common to hear other languages spoken frequently such as English, Tamil and Mandarin, Signs, menus and tickets are often printed in English, making getting around and communicating with the locals easier if you do not speak Malay.

Beautiful religious and cultural sights are available in Malaysia. Check the dress code of the areas you are looking to visit, as each religion has varied protocols on coverage of head, knees and shoulders The dominant religion is Islamic, however freedom of other religions is protected under the Malayan law.

Lincoln University
